Rethinking multiculturalism

In the recent months, multiculturalism has swung from becoming a positive value to a negative attribute. A sociologist suggested that this is due to globalization and that eventually, everyone in the world will become multiculturalists. However, a recent article shows otherwise and that there is a distinction between multiculturalism and monoculture pluralism where people from other cultures are tolerated more than they are accepted in the society. An excessive focus on the values of "monoculture" has left many countries without the glue to bind the "multicultures" together. And in other multicultural countries, there is a lack of a national identity and the process of assimilation to bond people.
With globalization, it is also possible for an individual to hold multiple identities which adds a new dimension to the term multiculturalism. Asia is a place which houses more than 90 ethnic groups with representation of the entire world's major religion. Challenges facing Asia in the 21st century will include dealing with the changing idea of multiculturalism.
